Oscar biggest winner — Clint Eastwood

Million Dollar Baby

This year, the 77th Oscar, Clint Eastwood and his "Million Dollar Baby" became the biggest winners. Not only Eastwood, Hilary Swank and Morgan Freeman also got the recognitions on stage. It is a little bit out of my predictions. Annette Bening defeated by Swank again and her popularity in Hollywood is unexpectedly unhelpful. As I said in "Time for Oscar" a month ago, "The Aviator" seemed to be the biggest winner but now a number of statuettes went to the hands of Clint Eastwood and his controversial baby. Probably, Scorcese has to continue his work, otherwise he has to get the Lifetime Achievement Award only...

It is not a bad result, at least Clint Eastwood is an old but exceptional horse, and he is still in a top form. Indeed, he started to direct since 1971's "Play Misty for Me". I would not forget his "Unforgiven" (1992): it is matchable to name as a classic in 1990s after ripe development and revisions of the western genre by noteable directors like John Ford, Sergio Leone, Sam Peckinpah etc. Now, Eastwood's second little gold man would assure his bargaining power in dealing with Warner Brothers (he was not too satisfied with the cooperation). I would watch Oscar tonight, hope it is a good show.

Best Film - Million Dollar Baby (not The Aviator)
Director - Clint Eastwood (not Martin Scorsese)
Actor in a Leading Role - Jamie Foxx (correct)
Actress in a Leading Role - Hilary Swank (not Annette Bening)
Actor in a Supporting Role- Morgan Freeman (correct)
Actress in a Supporting Role - Cate Blanchett (correct)
Foreign Language Film - Mar adentro (correct)
Original Screenplay - Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Adapted Screenplay - Sideways
Animated Feature Film - The Incredibles (not Shrek 2, how could I get it wrong?)

100 funniest jokes ... not recommended

I found lots of web surfers bookmarked the page of this "100 Funniest Jokes of All Time" a week or two ago. Because my sister has to take a joke to share in the class next week, so I started to have a look on the list (3/4 of them already appeared in the GQ magazine). However, a large number of jokes are uninteresting, silly or bad-tasted. But if you are really bored and want to kill time with light stuff, go and read it. May be these two gags are two funniest examples:

I went to a restaurant with a sign that said they served breakfast at any time. So I ordered French toast during the Renaissance.
— Steven Wright, American stand-up comedian

My grandfather always said, "Don't watch your money; watch your health." So one day while I was watching my health, someone stole my money. It was my grandfather.
— Jackie Mason, another American stand-up comedian

Some changes in the Doghouse

I have to tell you some things have changed in this Doghouse. First of all, the "Weblog" under the categories altered to "Notices" (告白). I think it would be more accurate in meaning while focusing on this weblog rather than the others.

Also, the numerous posts "Movies watched recently" seem disorganizing, and are not easy to revise. Therefore, I tried to gather them into two posts, "Movies watched in December 2004" and "Movies watched in January 2005". And I would renew "Movies watched in February 2005" in this month regularly. I hope you would like it.

Finally, I guess some of you have already known about the disfunction of the message board for a period of time. Yes, it is still unavailable. Though I quite like this board, may be we have to change another one later. Sorry for any inconvenience caused.

William Chan

"Angels" became the Brits 25 best song

'Angels'

An old piece of news follows up "The greatest British single from 1977". At last, Robbie Williams got the BRITs 25 - Best Song Award from Gary Barlow (also a member of ex-boy band, Take That, but leading one). It is not surprising for me to about this result when the top five contenders came out in the end of January. The top fives included my picks "Wuthering Heights" by Kate Bush and "We are the Champions" by Queen, along with Joy Division's "Love Will Tear Us Apart" and Will Young's "Leave Right Now".

Choosing "Wuthering Heights" or "Love Will Tear Us Apart" would show a better taste. However, as a voting of public's favourite British song, "Angels" is a resonable and satisfactory choice. In fact, it is one of the best pop ballads in the 1990s and surely the most significant one for Robbie Williams, saving his career and leading him to the future fame. Robbie Williams sang it quite well, although it might be also successful for other singers (or even more popular). Congratulations to "Angels"!

Angels

I sit and wait
does an angel contemplate my fate
and do they know
the places where we go
when we're grey and old
'cos I've been told
that salvation lets their wings unfold
so when I'm lying in my bed
thoughts running through my head
and I feel that love is dead
I'm loving angels instead

and through it all she offers me protection
a lot of love and affection
whether I'm right or wrong
and down the waterfall
wherever it may take me
I know that life wont break me
when I come to call she wont forsake me
I'm loving angels instead

when I'm feeling weak
and my pain walks down a one way street
I look above
and I know ill always be blessed with love
and as the feeling grows
she breathes flesh to my bones
and when love is dead
I'm loving angels instead

and through it all she offers me protection
a lot of love and affection
whether I'm right or wrong
and down the waterfall
wherever it may take me
I know that life wont break me
when I come to call she wont forsake me
I'm loving angels instead

Arthur Miller left on the screen

Arthur Miller

Arthur Miller, one of the great American playwrights, whose work exposed the flaws in the fabric of the American dream, died Thursday night (10th February) at his home in Roxbury, Conn. He was 89. The author of "Death of a Salesman," a landmark of 20th-century drama, Mr. Miller grappled with the weightiest matters of social conscience in his plays and in them often reflected or reinterpreted the stormy and very public elements of his own life - including a brief and rocky marriage to Marilyn Monroe and his staunch refusal to cooperate with the red-baiting House Un-American Activities Committee.
— Except from the New York Times Obituary

Miller was named as one of the greatest dramatists after World War II (along with Tennessee Williams). On the screen, his most famous screenplay is John Huston's "The Misfits" (1961), starring his wife Monroe. Sorry that I have not seen it yet. If you are interested to know more about his works, besides reading, watching films is another choice. Some of his well-known works were adapted for the screen and widely accepted. For example, based on reviews, 1951's "Death of a Salesman" might be slightly better than Dustin Hoffman's TV version in 1985. And about Miller's another great play, "The Crucible", both 1996 remake by Miller's personal screenplay and the older French version "Les Sorcières de Salem" (1957) are highly worth seeing. Hope I could see all these later.

Lunar New Year,幾首年歌

Kung Hei Fat Choy and Maan Si Sing Yi

Tomorrow is the Lunar New Year's Day. In Chinese society, you have to say good blessing words to each other. You could congratulate people becoming rich by saying "Kung Hei Fat Choy", it is very popular though I do not like it much. A better choice is "Maan Si Sing Yi", it means all your heart's wishes would be fulfilled.

I am only able to introduce four New Year songs to share the atmosphere of festival with you. (In fact, Chinese like to listen to New Year songs too). The first one is an English song "Happy New Year" famously sung by Swedish group Abba. It is not a song for Chinese because it has certain what we think "unlucky" or "unfavourable" words like die, lost etc. But nothing is taboo to me. Besides, it is a really nice song.

Happy New Year

No more champagne
And the fireworks are through
Here we are, me and you
Feeling lost and feeling blue
It's the end of the party
And the morning seems so gray
So unlike yesterday
Now's the time for us to say...

Happy new year, happy new year
May we all have a vision now and then
Of a world where every neighbor is a friend
Happy new year, happy new year
May we all have our hopes, our will to try
If we don't we might as well lay down and die
You and I

Sometimes I see
How the brave new world arrives
And I see how it thrives
In the ashes of our lives
Oh yes, man is a fool
And he thinks he'll be okay
Dragging on, feet of clay
Never knowing he's astray
Keeps on going anyway...

Seems to me now
That the dreams we had before are all dead
Nothing more than confetti on the floor
It's the end of a decade
In another ten years time
Who can say what we'll find
What lies waiting down the line
In the end of eighty-nine...

G. Gombrich《

David Landes《

Fighting in developing world

It is an interview of Jeffrey Sachs in Davos, Switzerland, from the International Herald Tribune last week. Sachs was a famous economist in the 1990s when he worked as the economics advisor to Bolivia, Poland and Russia. Though his suggestion of shock therapy in macroeconomics was controversial. Later he left Harvard (he became full professor at 29) after Lawrence Summers was appointed as the president. In the recent years, he changed his attention to fighting with global poverty by leading United Nations' Millennium Development Goals.

In the interview, Sachs criticized the industrialized countries like the States, Japan, and Germany etc. for putting too little in helping the poor. In fact, as I know, some nations often broke their aid pledge in the past too. Hope the haves know that they are more responsible to the world; their assistance is crucial. So the disasters, such as Indian Ocean tsunami, could not bring such huge destruction in future.

Other interviews with Sachs last year (in Chinese): Economic Observer, Economy Magazine
